How to Make Easy Homemade Butter Bread

This butter bread is so soft, delicious, and super easy to make! Be sure to also check out my homemade honey wheat bread!

Since store-bought bread is scarce right now due to the coronavirus (aka Covid-19) pandemic, now is the perfect time to start making your own! I went grocery shopping earlier this week and was shocked to find the bread aisle completely bare! It was a scary sight! I quickly rushed to the baking aisle and was relieved to see the flour shelf was still full.

Since butter bread is my family's favorite, I knew I had to replicate that same bread and thankfully I came up with this recipe. It's easy to make and the bread is so soft, delicious, and perfect for sandwiches and toast or, if you're like my kids, gobbling it up all by its self!😋 Also, since the kids are stuck at home right now, bread is so much fun for them to help make! I always pinch off a piece of dough for my kids to play with before I shape it into a loaf...that's their favorite part!😆

I used a stand mixer to make my dough; however, you can always make it by hand just make sure you knead the dough for at least 10 minutes. Also, if you have a hard time finding honey, just replace it with the same amount of sugar and only use 7 cups of flour total. If you have a hard time finding bread flour, all-purpose flour will work just fine. Trust me, this bread is so good you will want to continue making it long after this pandemic is over!

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups warm water (105-110°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons (2 packets) active dry yeast
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • 1 egg yolk (beaten)
  • 2 Tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 ice cubes
  • 2 Tablespoons salted butter (softened)

    Directions:
    1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, pour in warm water (105-110°F), add sugar, and stir. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
    2. Attach dough hook and turn mixer on low. Add 1 cup bread flour, butter, egg, egg yolk, honey, milk, and salt. Slowly mix in 6 1/2 cups of bread flour (1 cup at a time) until dough pulls away from the sides forming a ball. Knead on speed level "2" for 5 minutes.
    3. Remove mixing bowl from stand mixer. Pour 1 Tablespoon olive oil in bottom of mixing bowl and toss dough in oil until completely coated. Cover bowl with greased plastic wrap and a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
    4. Grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans with olive oil and place aside.
    5. Punch down bread dough and turn out onto a floured surface. Divide dough into 2 equal halves. Using a rolling pin, roll each half into a rectangle about 9x13 inches and roll up starting from the short end. Pinch seams together and place in greased loaf pans (seam-side down).
    6. Cover each loaf with greased plastic wrap and a damp cloth. Let rise for 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above tops of loaf pans.
    7. Uncover loaves and place in a 350°F oven. Throw 3 ice cubes in the bottom of the oven and quickly shut the oven door. Bake for 30 minutes or until internal temperature of bread reaches 190-210°F. Cool on a wire rack and brush tops of loaves with softened salted butter.
    8. Allow bread to cool completely, at least 1 hour, before slicing.
    9. Slice, serve, and enjoy!
Once sliced, place bread loaves in 2 gallon ziplock bags or wrap tightly with plastic wrap and store at room temperature. Be sure to look below for the printable recipe!👇
